Welcome

Mark Velez

I'm a biracial vegetarian atheist gay programmer. I live with my boyfriend Alex in Brooklyn, New York. Here I might blog about just about anything, but most of my entries will be about things I pick up as a junior programmer, or a developing developer. Not only does this serve as a way for me to remember stuff I learn, but perhaps other struggling programmers can benefit from this as well.

IKEA Customer Service and the Longest 3 Days of My Life

For many college students, renters, or people just looking for budget furniture, IKEA is the solution for their furnishing needs. Their furniture is not only very well priced, but also stylish and practical. How can IKEA afford to make great furniture for so cheap? Well, to start, the consumer has (for the most part) to assemble her furniture herself. Since most of their furniture can thus be flat-packed, IKEA saves a lot of money on shipping. Also, IKEA exports a lot of labor to developing countries.

Hooray, I'm a Microsoft Technology Specialist : .NET Framework 2.0 Web Applications.

I needed to get a Microsoft certification to upgrade my title and get paid a little more at work. In particular, I had to attain the 'Microsoft Technology Specialist : .NET Framework 2.0 Web Applications' Certification. I had been stressing about this for about a month because a lot depends on me getting this cert. A lot of frustration was caused just by not knowing what attaining the cert entailed.

Memberships and Roles in ASP.NET

So I have an ASP.NET application. It's pretty cool; it was my first time using the built-in Membership and Role classes. It was also my first time using the built-in membership and role -related ASP.NET controls such as the Login, LoginView, and LoginStatus controls. For those not in the know, these controls automatically can determine the status / role of the current user and render accordingly. I set up the memberships and roles using the Web Site Administration Tool (which can be accessed on the menu Website->ASP.NET Configuration) in Visual Studio (see below).
